Do you ever feel frustrated with the advice that you should follow your heart because you don’t know what that means or how to do it?
What if I told you that it is actually quite simple to follow your heart? Below are three questions that will help you to tune in and follow the call of your heart.
Why do you want what you want?
Chances are good that you know what you want – or at least you think you do. Perhaps you are looking for a romantic partner, more money, or a certain kind of lifestyle. All of those desires are great, but they aren’t helping you to follow your heart.
Your heart guides you through your feelings. When you understand why you want what you want you are closer to hearing your heart’s desire. Everything that you are hoping for or working toward is because you believe that it will make you feel a certain way in the having of it.
Take a moment to be still, quiet your mind, and think about what you want. Can you sense the emotion behind it? Can you feel the desire in your body? Can you identify how you want to feel?
What do you love?
This seems like a simple question, but can you answer it? Do you know what brings joy into your life? Do you know what lights you up and makes you feel alive? Do you know where your passion is?
The things that we love are an indication of the path we should take in life. When you find something that really lights you up, the obstacles become easier and the path clears for you. When something captivates your attention it is easy to put hours into cultivating that skill or wisdom.
What are you enthusiastic about? The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek word entheos meaning “full of the god, inspired, possessed”. When you feel excited by something and drawn to it with deep interest, you are experiencing the call of your heart and soul. Follow your enthusiasm – that is spirit working through you.
How does this make me feel?
In any given moment you are experiencing some sort of emotion. Sometimes those emotions are stronger than others, but you are always in some sort of emotional state. If you can tune into how you feel right now, then you can follow your heart.
Learn to play red light, green light throughout your day. Does it feel good? Then keep moving in that direction – your heart is giving you the emotional green light. Does it feel draining? Then it’s warning to rethink the direction you are headed. Does it feel aggravating? Then your heart says stop.
You want to feel good. The question is, why are you tolerating anything less? You have the power to turn your emotions around with your perspective. Practice noticing how you feel and whether or not you like it. If you don’t like it, examine ways that you can change it.
Following your heart is as simple as that – know why you want what you want and cultivate that feeling, do what you love, and do what feels good. Your heart will always lead you down the path of ease and positive emotion.
